156: Battalion 1944, Monster Hunter: World and Games for Streaming

Episode Summary

We revisit Monster Hunter World, talk about the new Battalion 1944 early access shooter and explore what to expect from Red Dead Redemption 2. Our discussion explores video games now being designed for streaming.

Episode Notes

This week we try the next attempt for "boots on the ground" gameplay with Battalion 1944. It's an indie game published by Square Enix attempting to bring back the magic of WWII shooters from the early 2000's. Does it succeed? We also revisit Monster Hunter: World because that game is so good. We can't get enough of it. We're also learning how deep the systems go in this game.

In our news, we talk about all the announcements from Electronic Arts such as the delay of Anthem, a Battlefield confirmed for 2018 and more. Nintendo reveals a lot such as a Mario Kart mobile game, the expansiveness of their Nintendo Labo Kit and the September launch of the online service. We also got a sudden announcement of PUBG meets Twisted Metal. Greatest idea ever or biggest flop?

Our discussion this week is how streaming is affecting video game design. With games like S.O.S. being built around a streaming audience, what does that mean for the future of video game design? Will we see more developers consciously making design decisions to satisfy the needs of audiences? Don't forget to check our video segment on this talk Thursday at youtube.com/theinnergamer.
